Trump’s D.C. Power Grab Splits Black America

Trump’s takeover of D.C. policing has Black voices split, some call it protection, others an occupation. Why is the community so divided?

Good morning, BFA Fam! If you need something entertaining to watch this week, check out the fiery debate between Amanda Seales and 20 Black Conservatives. Seales argued these forces shape Black communities, while the conservatives pushed personal responsibility, crime as moral failing, and traditional values… What do you think, are our challenges more about the systems we live in or the choices we make?

🔥 Divided in D.C.: Black Voices Split Over Trump’s Police Takeover

⚡ THE SPARK

“Be prepared! There will be no ‘Mr. Nice Guy,’” Trump blasted on Truth Social as 800 National Guard troops rolled into Washington, D.C. His move to seize control of the city’s police force set off alarms across the capital, some calling it an “occupation,” others quietly welcoming the muscle.

In Southeast D.C., where crime feels like a daily threat, a few residents said federal help is overdue. But when Trump called their city “dirty” and “disgusting,” many saw it as confirmation he wasn’t here to protect them, he was here to use them.

🧠 THE LAYER BELOW

  • Crime in D.C. is actually at a 30-year low, violent crime down 26%, homicides down 32%, yet Trump insists the city is spiraling.

  • Black mayors across the country see this as a test run for federal crackdowns in their own cities.

  • Some residents in Congress Heights want more police presence but resent being caricatured as “roving mobs.”

  • Trump pardoned Jan. 6 rioters who attacked police, yet now claims to be the defender of law and order.

  • Critics tie the move to gentrification: policing Black communities while protecting white areas and tourist zones.

  • For others, it’s about safety over symbolism, “the more the better,” one local said of the Guard’s arrival.

  • The divide cuts deep: protection vs. persecution, safety vs. sovereignty.

🎯 THE REAL QUESTION

When the people who need help the most are the first to question your motives, what does that say about your “rescue mission”?

🔮 WHAT’S NEXT

The federal takeover of D.C.’s police force is a harsh reminder that for many Black Americans, the conversation about public safety is rarely simple. It's a complex equation that balances the need for protection from crime with the fear of being harmed by the very systems meant to protect them. Going forward, true solutions won't come from a top-down, authoritarian approach that ignores local leadership and community trust. They will emerge from a place of genuine collaboration, where residents and leaders come together to address the root causes of crime, investing in youth programs, mental health services, and economic opportunities. A city is only as strong as its most vulnerable neighborhoods. Without trust, there is no true law and order.

In 2010, a Grammy-winning artist passed on investing $200K in an emerging real estate disruptor. That stake could be worth $100+ million today.

One year later, another real estate disruptor, Zillow, went public. This time, everyday investors had regrets, missing pre-IPO gains.

Now, a new real estate innovator, Pacaso – founded by a former Zillow exec – is disrupting a $1.3T market. And unlike the others, you can invest in Pacaso as a private company.

Pacaso’s co-ownership model has generated $1B+ in luxury home sales and service fees, earned $110M+ in gross profits to date, and received backing from the same VCs behind Uber, Venmo, and eBay. They even reserved the Nasdaq ticker PCSO.

Paid advertisement for Pacaso’s Regulation A offering. Read the offering circular at invest.pacaso.com. Reserving a ticker symbol is not a guarantee that the company will go public. Listing on the NASDAQ is subject to approvals.

📨 TRUMP GOES OFF: MAIL-IN BALLOTS MUST GO! Donald Trump is once again targeting mail-in voting, vowing to wipe it out with an executive order ahead of the 2026 midterms. Despite GOP gains from mail ballots in 2024, Trump doubled down on his fraud claims, even roping in Vladimir Putin’s “support” during their Alaska summit. Legal experts note he can’t kill mail-in ballots alone, states control election rules, but Trump insists Democrats are “unelectable” without them. Classic Trump firestorm brewing. (NY Times)

🎬 50 CENT SAYS “BYE, BYE” TO STARZ AS NETWORK BLEEDS MILLIONS. 50 Cent’s messy breakup with Starz just got pettier. The rapper-turned-TV-mogul clowned the network after reports showed it lost $42.5 million and over 400K subscribers in just three months. Starz blamed the decline on its Lionsgate split, but Fif wasn’t buying it, posting, “It’s not that hard to say good bye. bye.” Despite the drama, his hit shows like Power and BMF still keep the lights on… for now. 💉 MALARIA MAKES DEADLY COMEBACK IN ZIMBABWE AFTER U.S. AID CUTS. Health experts warn malaria is back “with a vengeance” in Zimbabwe after U.S. funding cuts gutted research and prevention programs. Deaths have tripled since 2024, rising from 45 to 143 in just five months, while cases surged past 120,000. Without mosquito nets, medicine, or testing kits, hospitals are overwhelmed and lives are at risk. Climate change is fueling the crisis further, threatening to derail Africa’s 2030 malaria control goals. (Yahoo)

🌀 HURRICANE ERIN UNLEASHES CHAOS: EAST COAST BRACES FOR DEADLY WAVES. Hurricane Erin has roared back to Category 4 strength, churning up life-threatening surf and rip tides along the U.S. East Coast. The storm already dumped torrential rain on Puerto Rico, knocking out power to 150,000, and is now lashing the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos with up to six inches of rainfall. While Erin isn’t expected to make direct landfall, evacuations are underway in North Carolina’s Outer Banks as forecasters warn the storm remains “large and dangerous.” (BBC)
